A New Kind of Guidance
“Clients are now coming to us for guidance,” notes Tavis our Managing Director. “That’s not just necessarily guidance in the job that they need to fill but how to run the business issues that they’re coming through.”
This change reflects an understanding of what businesses truly need. Rather than focusing solely on matching candidates to job specifications, recruiters are really trying to understand the fundamental challenges their clients are facing.
Being Realistic Looking Beyond the Job Spec
“I generally tell clients you’ve got a job spec great, let’s have a look at it, but I’ll tear it up within two seconds because I need to know what the hole in their business is,” shares Tavis.
This approach represents a departure from traditional recruitment practices. By focusing on the “hole in the business” rather than just the job requirements, recruiters can offer more tailored recruitment solutions that address the underlying issues companies face.
The Shifting Expectations of Today’s Workforce
Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of modern recruitment is the changing expectations of prospective candidates.
Tavis says in his interview “The weirdest thing that I’m seeing at the moment is no one wants overtime. Everyone just wants to come to 38 Hour Week, go home and turn off.”
This shift toward work-life balance presents a considerable challenge for employers who may still operate with traditional expectations regarding workload and availability.
Managing Realistic Expectations
Recruiters increasingly find themselves in the position of managing client expectations, particularly regarding compensation and workload.
When clients expect new hires to match the output of departing employees while maintaining the same compensation and strict 38-hour weeks, recruiters must step in with market reality checks.
“Oh, but the person we had previously did fit that in a 38-hour? Yeah, that’s why they left. They got more money elsewhere. Oh, we only want to pay for this? You’re paying here; the Market’s here,” explains the Tavis, highlighting the disconnect between client expectations and market realities.
The New Role: Guiding Realistic Outcomes
“So the role of a recruiter is more to guide the client on realistic outcomes,” summarises Tavis, this represents a great opportunity for recruitment agencies to add value beyond the traditional service model. and position themselves as indispensable business partners rather than mere service providers.
